Steamboat local, World Brewing School graduate, former University of Vermont Ski Team Captain, musician, avid mountain biker, semi-avid surfer, and semi-pro arm wrestler. Nate runs the show at Butcherknife but you'll often find him waist deep in powder, trail running, or charging hard on his mountain bike.
Grant McFarren | Head Brewer
Grant got his start at Wicked WeedBrewing in Asheville, NC. There he learned the in's & out's of making consistently great beer. While in Asheville, Grant obtained a degree with highest honors in Brewing, Distillation, & Fermentation from the Craft Beverage Institute of the Southeast at Asheville-Buncombe Technical College. He is particularly proud of his capstone project, a grain-to-glass gin made with locally harvested spruce tips. It was damned delicious. Fortunately, life conspired to bring Grant back West and he found a new home brewing at Butcherknife in the fall of 2017.
Grant loves dry, aromatic IPAs, barrel-aged mixed culture ales and almost every other well-made beer. When not at Butcherknife, you can find Grant in the backcountry running, skiing or hiking with his fiance Katie and their radical dog Bowie.
Matt Troeger | #1 Assistant of Everything
Born in Steamboat Springs and graduated from the Steamboat Springs High School, Matt used to drive by Butcherknife when it was under construction and look into the windows - always hoping that one day he'd work here. Once the brewery opened, he stopped by to introduce himself (more than once) and pretty soon he was offered a job.
Erin Orr | Account Manager
Erin brings the life to party, and knows how to whip and nae nae with the best of them. Erin grew up drinking Busch Light in Cascade, Iowa, known for the nearby Field of Dreams. Erin was first introduced to craft beer when she visited Steamboat for the first time at the age of 20 with the Iowa State University Ski and Snowboard Club. After graduating from ISU with a degree in Advertising and Apparel Merchandise, Production and Design, Erin moved to Oregon in search of work. After several years, she picked a new path and moved to Steamboat. When she found out there was a new brewery opening in Steamboat, she was overcome with excitement and found herself reevaluating her career path. Erin's bubbly personality landed her a part time role pouring beers in the tap room and planning events and promotions. Now in a full time role, she’s not afraid to get her hands wet at the brewery, however Erin prefers to spend her time on the road, talking about our delicious beers and opening new accounts across the state.
